Testing Shellfish

Purpose:

To provide data to the Washington State Department of Health on potential Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning.

Description:

On Camano Island a volunteer digs butter clams at Utsalady and Madrona beaches so that they can be checked for paralytic shellfish poisoning.

At Cornet Bay State Park, volunteers maintain a submerged cage of mussels from which a sampling is taken bi-weekly, along with samples of water-born micro-organisms.

Volunteer Opportunities:

This project is currently conducted by a few volunteers, but could be the responsibility of a small team.
