Oil Spill Assessment

Purpose:

To use volunteers to assess the nature of any oil spill event around Island County - in order to inform the State Department of Ecology prior to the deployment of emergency oil spill clean up crews.

Description:

A team of volunteers have prepared a notebook in both hard-copy and digital format, containing descriptions of locations around the county which provide (1) Bluff vistas (2) Beach access and (3) Boat launch sites.

These descriptions include photographs, GPS coordinates, travel directions, and parking availability. The ICOSAT team is now exploring working in partnership with such volunteer organizations as Citizen Action Network and Coastguard Auxiliary, to have trained volunteers ready to go to an oil spill location, assess the situation, and report it to the State Department of Ecology.

Volunteer Oppportunities:

This is an emerging project looking for volunteers to drive it forward.
