Green Algae Bloom Research

Purpose:

To provide data to correlate the abundance of green algae (ulva sp.)  with water quality information.

Description:

Dr. Kathy Van Alstyne from the Shannon Point Marine Center and her research colleagues are conducting an ongoing survey of the abundance of green algae at six sites, two of which are located in Penn Cove, between May and September.  Utilizing quadrat analysis, water and seaweed samples, in addition to continuous recording of water temperature, salinity, pH, and dissolved oxygen by Hydrolab data sondes the researchers hope to find a relationship between algae blooms and water conditions.

Volunteer Oppportunities:

This project currently involves one or two volunteers working with Dr. Van Alstyne and her research colleagues doing quadrat analysis at the two Penn Cove monitoring sites.
