Analipus japonicus (Bottle brush, Fir branch)

This brown seaweed has a persistent encrusting phase ~5 to 20 cm in diameter that resembles Ralfsia. From spring to fall an upright phase resembling a dark brown fir branch or narrow bottle brush arise from the encrusting phase consisting of one main upright branch with numerous short (to 3 cm) unbranched side branches . Analipus prefers more exposed areas in the mid to lower intertidal.
