Strongylocentrotus purpuratus (Purple sea urchin)

Pictured is the underside of a purple sea urchin.  Note the length of the spines in proportion to the size of the test. In this species, the spines are relatively short and stout; their length is about one third the diameter of the animal's test (shell).
