Semibalanus
cariosus is often called
the "thatched barnacle" because it looks like a little
pile of straw. It can grow fairly large, to a width of about 2 inches.
Color varies with age; younger ones are white and like many of us,
they become grayer as they get older.
Like
the acorn barnacle ( Balanus glandula ), this species can
grow into tall columns if it gets crowded so look carefully for
the "thatching" The top plates of larger S. cariosus
look almost like a beak and form a wavy line where they join.
Look for this species in the middle and lower intertidal zones.
