Semibalanus cariosus (Thatched barnacle)

Semibalanus cariosus is often called the "thatched barnacle" because it looks like a little pile of straw. It can grow fairly large, to a width of about 2 inches. Color varies with age; younger ones are white and like many of us, they become grayer as they get older.

Like the acorn barnacle ( Balanus glandula ), this species can grow into tall columns if it gets crowded so look carefully for the "thatching" The top plates of larger S. cariosus look almost like a beak and form a wavy line where they join. Look for this species in the middle and lower intertidal zones.
